What is MSTR® ? otherwise known as Mcloughlin Scar Tissue Release MSTR®
MSTR® was developed by Alastair McLoughlin an experienced Body Therapist, Bowen Therapist and instructor since early 1980. He has taught his own Art of Bodywork techniques around the world since 1990. He then continued to refine and improve MSTR® since 2009. It is “probably the most valuable and important technique I have ever developed” to treat scar tissue. ( A. McLoughlin)
Just about everyone has some sort of scar on their body. Whether it is from surgery, such as a C-section, abdominal surgery, knee, hip, shoulder or joint replacement, sport injury, tears due to injury or trauma, plantar fasciitis, or just a cut from falling off your bike as a kid. The majority of these scars can be treated effectively using the MSTR® technique.
So, what is scar tissue and how does it happen?
When there is an injury or incision to the skin, our body releases these special cells called fibroblasts. They migrate to the area of injury to heal it. These myofibroblasts heal the damaged tissue by laying down collagen. However, the collagen is not laid in a perfect fashion and ends up being disorganised mixed-up fibres. This in turn contracts and repairs the tissue. This happens in a matter of moments and the tensional forces and modifying tissue matrix creates a scar. Scars may be thin, thick, wide or coloured. Now not all scars cause discomfort, but sometimes there is a reason why you can’t lift your arm as high as before, after shoulder surgery. Or perhaps you are having some issues with abdominal numbness since having that C-Section.
What are the effects of scar tissue?
Scars have the potential to create both physiological and psychological impact. Scar tissue can have long-term effects on neural pathways, range of movement, blood and lymph flow, emotional, and psychological levels. The scar tissue can cause adhesions to other tissues in the body.
Scar tissue can act as a roadblock to your Qi (Chi). There are five or six acupuncture meridian pathways that are affected by a C-Section. When the flow of Qi is interrupted, health issues in remote areas of the body could be created.
What is the MSTR® treatment?
It is gentle and non-invasive and many clients have an immediate release from the scar tissue after just one treatment. Scars of any age can be treated with great outcomes, no matter how old it is, but your scar must be over eight weeks old. I have treated a shoulder scar that was sixty years old. That client can fully raise their arm now.
Every scar has a story! What is yours?
Picture of scar tissue before and after MSTR.
The two images on the right side of this image (taken by a Scanning Electron Microscope – SEM) show the usual collagen arrangement – uniform and organized.
The other four images show scar tissue. They’re disorganized arrangements that don’t allow for blood and lymph flow through it.
When we apply MSTR® we help recreate a more organized structure – like the images on the right.
